How to Make Money From a Blog

Do you want to earn money by blogging? A blog is a web log or an online diary that can be for business or pleasure. Many people now earn part-time or even full-time salaries by blogging for money. Find out a few ways that you can monetize your blog and earn money for your efforts.

Difficulty:
Moderately Challenging

Instructions

  1. Start Your Blog

    • 1

Choose a blog. There are free hosted blogs online through many sources that can help you by giving you the tools and resources to make it simple to start your own blog. Or you can register a domain name and start your blog from scratch if you have a bit of technical savvy.

    • 2

Choose a niche. Once you’ve decided on a blog, decide what you will write about to attract visitors. Some simply use their blog as a place to write editorials or opinions while others blog about a specific subject they are knowledgeable on. Many professional bloggers recommend that you choose a niche so you can build a following.

    • 3

Promote your blog. Use web services that will get you some attention such as blog directories and social bookmarking. Using these services can help you get indexed in search engines and drive traffic to your blog. Commenting on other blogs can also build links in to your blog and help more people find you. Once you have some material to read and are indexed in search engines, you can begin to really monetize your blog and start earning money.

    Monetize Your Blog

    • 1

Sign up with Google Adsense. Google offers the ability for people to display targeted advertisements on their blog. Google will give you a percentage of that revenue when people: click on the ads, view the ads and purchase something from a sponsor. You need to apply to Google Adsense and wait for acceptance, and then you will have to work with your blog program to embed the code so the advertisements display properly. This is not difficult.

You need to follow Google’s TOS (terms of service) in order to maintain good standing. See warning section in this article for more information.

    • 2

Apply to other websites that pay you to post on your blog. There are many blog sites that will pay you a flat fee for writing a specific advertisement and link into your blog. Sites like Payperpost, Blogitive or Blogvertise offer these services once your blog has been indexed in search engines such as Google.

    • 3

Apply for professional blogging jobs. Many online classified networks advertise the ability to post on your own blog or on a blog belonging to a company. Many freelance bloggers earn a regular income by blogging this way.

    • 4

Join affiliate programs like Amazon and Chikita Mini Malls that offer the ability to advertise on your blog. Many affiliate marketing programs exist that allow you to monetize your blog and earn based on click through rates.

    Maintain Your Blog

    • 1

Update your blog regularly. By keeping your blog fresh, you attract readers who will keep coming back and who might click your ads or purchase advertised services.

    • 2

Add reader services to your blog such as RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds to allow syndication and to attract more readers. Continually finding ways to grow and improve your blog will increase your money-earning potential.

    • 3

Advertise. Once you are earning money from your blog, increase your earning potential by paying for advertising in places that fit your niche. You can also accomplish this by trading links and banners with other pro bloggers to increase exposure for your blog.

How to Make Money Blogging

Making money with blogs has become easier over the years now that blogs have become more mainstream. However, to successfully turn your blog into a money making machine you’re going to have to work hard, post often and spread you revenue potential over many different streams to bring in the kind of money that would allow you to quit your day job. Follow these steps to find out how.

Difficulty:
Moderate

Instructions

    • 1

Create a blog using any one of the free services such as Blogger or WordPress.

    • 2

Focus your blog on a particular subject such as sports, politics, current events, or whatever interests you. Be witty and informative. A little controversy wouldn’t hurt.

    • 3

Blog consistently for six months, at least three new posts a week. To apply for most blogging jobs you need to have been blogging for at least six months.

    • 4

Add Google ads to your blog to help generate income by joining AdWords, which you can do from Google’s website. There are other ad choices such as BlogAds or CrispAds that are popular.

    • 5

Apply to one of the blog networks such as b5Media, 451 Press or Wise Bread after you have been blogging for six months to be a blogger for them. They are going to ask you if you want to suggest a new topic for their network. If your blog covers a topic that isn’t covered on their network then suggest your blog be added.

    • 6

Visit the “Pro Blogger Job Board” and apply for positions you find posted there.

    • 7

Getting sponsored by a business is another way to make money blogging. In most cases sponsorship happens by businesses approaching blogs that cover a demographic they are interested in.

    • 8

Join an Affiliate program. Amazon, Clickbank and “Commission Junction” are some of the major affiliate programs but there are literally thousands you can choose from.

    • 9

Place a donate button on your blog. Some bloggers hold regular fund-raising drives and some have managed to blog full-time because of the donations from their readers.

How to Get Paid to Post Videos

When the Internet first started, the content was mainly generated by academics, the military and a few early adopters. User generated content is the biggest trend on the Web these days. Many sites accept user-generated content for no charge. Others actually have subscription fees for uploading content. A few sites allow you to post videos and get paid, using new business models that benefit the site and the producer. Read on to learn how to get paid to post videos.

Difficulty:
Moderately Challenging

Instructions

    • 1

Review the terms of service at sites that accept video submissions for pay. Break, Cruxy and Upblogger are just a few of the sites that pay for posted videos. Each has a different payment system.

    • 2

Read reviews of these sites in blogs that review making money on the Internet. Familiarize yourself with the pros and cons of making your content public by posting videos on the Internet for a price.

    • 3

Check the website rank and link popularity to narrow down your paid video posting website choices to the top five potential sites that pay for video posting. You will spend less time promoting your video, if the site you choose has higher traffic.

    • 4

Check for complaints against paid video posting websites at the Better Business Bureau.

    • 5

Register for the paid video posting website that seems to be the best fit for you and your content. Before posting any videos, read and reread the copyrights requested and payment terms.

    • 6

Select content from your existing digital video collection. Be sure that your video matches the accepted file format. If you need a different format, try using the Zamzar online file converter.

    • 7

Promote your uploaded video. Don’t spam.

How to Make Money Blogging with Blogitive

Blogitive is a website that pays you to post your blogs online. You may not get rich working with Blogitive, as the payments are a flat $5 rate, but you can earn a steady income monthly by writing these paid posts of 100 words. That’s less words than most other sites ask for, so while you get paid less, you have to write less. Blogitive is a perfect way to begin a profitable blogging career, if used right.

Difficulty:
Easy

Instructions

Things You’ll Need

  • Blog at least 90 days old
    • 1

Sign up at Blogitive. All you need to sign up for Blogitive is a blog that is 90 days old, an email account and a PayPal account, as all payments are made via PayPal (see Resources below).

    • 2

Bid on as many opportunities as you want. First, click on an opportunity. An opportunity is an advertiser asking you to submit a short ad on your site (a unique, 100-word piece written by you selling a product or service). This gives you all the tools you need, including a press release, to write a post. However, you will need two non-Blogitive posts between each paid post. For example, you accept two opportunities. You cannot place them one after the other; you need two original non-Blogitive posts between each Blogitive opportunity. The good news is these only have to be 50 words a piece. So, you post one paid post opportunity; now you have to write two original posts of at least 50 words before you can post another paid Blogitive post.

    • 3

Pick blog advertisement opportunities. A good strategy, once you’re signed up, is to go to the Blogitive site on a daily basis, as the opportunities will come at various times in the day. All you really have to do is click on the “Reserve Opportunity” link, which allows you to accept the offer. Many opportunities will have nothing to do with your blog. Sometimes you have no choice, as you may have a niche blog. In the end, it’s up to you.For example, you might get offered car repair or dating services, while your blog is on art. If you want to make more money online, it’s best to choose any opportunities available unless they seem to be on controversial topics.

    • 4

Stay honest. If you have a small readership, they probably won’t mind a few odd paid posts. But if you post dozens on one blog it can hurt your readership, and possibly your Google Page Ranking. A Google Page Ranking is your ranking in comparison to other sites, and determines which pages get into Google’s top 10 or top 100 on that subject. The good news is Blogitive doesn’t pick your blog because it has a huge rating; as long as the blog is 90 days old, you can post.

    • 5

Use multiple blogs. The best way to make money with Blogitive is to use multiple blogs. If you don’t have another blog, this step is unnecessary. However, if you have two or more blogs 90 days old or longer, this step will work for you. For example, 10 opportunities come up on your Blogitive Opportunity page. You have one accepted blog on the site. You click on all of the blogging advertisement opportunities for your one blog, then remember that you will need 20 or more non-Blogitive posts of 50 words. It can be hard to write so many non-Blogitive posts for one blog. Instead of putting all your paid opportunities on one blog, you can spread them out. This allows you to write different articles on different topics for each blog. When you spread out the paid advertisements, it stops you from filling one blog with too many.

    • 6

Collect your check. Once an opportunity is accepted, which happens usually within a few days, your paid blog entry will appear on the “Completed Offers” page. Blogitive pays on a weekly basis via PayPal.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

    • 1

Develop a blog topic. Make sure that there is enough interest in what you want to blog about. Also, make sure that you have enough interest in that area to formulate enough blog content.

    • 2

Create your blog. You can start out with a free blog. There are many to consider that are free and simple to use. Develop the pages and widgets that make your blog interesting and unique.

    • 3

Create accounts with advertising services. Google, Yahoo, and Amazon are all very common services that are used. Fill out the forms and wait to get approved. Follow the steps that are provided and place the code on your blog.

    • 4

Consider getting accounts with websites like Clickbank. You can create your own hoplinks and blog about them. A word of advice, make sure you know where the links are leading. Many people will avoid the links if you constantly bring them to content that is irrelevant and unwanted. Keep your blog topic in mind.

    • 5

Advertise your blog. Let everyone know about it. Make sure that your blog is being crawled by search engines. If they are not, you can always request your blog to be crawled by submitting your blog URL. You can also participate on website like BlogCatelogue, which is a social network for bloggers. It can boost your traffic dramatically.

    • 6

Update your blog regularly. Aim for four to six new blog posts a day. This is a minimum that you should strive for in order to have a productive blog.

    • 7

When your blog starts to gain in popularity, consider selling products. T-shirts, stickers, posters, bumper stickers, and other items will be welcomed by your audience. This can easily be set up with PayPal.

    • 8

Accept donations to keep your blog going. If you have purchased your own domain name for the blog, it does take money to keep in running. Donations can be given through PayPal. Make sure you send an individual “Thank You” to those that donate. It is much more personal that way.

How to Start a Blog Page and Make Money

Starting a blog can be really overwhelming at first, but it really isn’t too bad if you’ve got someone to guide you through the darkness. Fortunately you found me. Let me guide you through the confusion and teach you the John Rapp way to start a blog.

Difficulty:
Easy

Instructions

Things You’ll Need

  • Patience
    • 1

      BLOGSPOT.COM

Or if you prefer, Blogger.com. They’re both the same thing, doesn’t matter which one you use. So go sign up for a blog at Blogspot.com. It’s completely free, and you’ll be blogging your brains out in no time.

There are tons of places to get your own blog, but I recommend Blogspot because it’s owned by Google, and that makes it really easy to set up AdSense for your new blog. What is AdSense? It puts those small Google advertisements onto your blog. This is good, because you make money when people click on the links! Not bad for a free blog, huh?

    • 2

      PICK YOUR URL

The next step is picking your new blog’s URL, or the address people type into their web browser to pull up your blog. If you’re using Blogspot like you should be, your blog’s URL will be YOURBLOGHERE.blogspot.com, and that’s super.

Don’t sweat it too much, because you can always change your blog’s name whenever you want. But the best idea is to find a good title and a good URL and stick with them. Changing your URL and title will only confuse people who may be trying to keep up with your blog, and drive away repeat readers.

Try to make the URL simple. This can be hard sometimes because there’s tons of people using Blogspot, and there’s a really good chance that SteveSmith.blogspot.com has already been taken. So you have to think of something else.

    • 3

      THEME IT

It’s good to have a general theme for when you start a blog, so think of a topic you have a lot to say about and use that as your new blog’s title. An example is like, if you decide that your new blog is about surfing, then name your blog SurfSpot.blogspot.com. If it’s already taken then think of something else, such as calling it TheOriginalSurfSpot. This is one of my favorite tricks, because it makes your blog look like the real deal while that other guy’s surfing blog is left out in the cold. Take that, beach bum.

    • 4

      CHOOSE A TEMPLATE

Next up is picking a template for your new blog. Blogspot calls their site "push button publishing," and you’re about to find out why. You can change your layout whenever you want, and it’s a good idea to come back later and reevaluate your template after a couple weeks after you start a blog. But for now just pick something you don’t totally hate. Don’t get sucked into analysis paralysis or else you may never actually write a single word in your new blog. Boom, boom, boom – that’s the way to get this done.

    • 5

      NEW POST

After you verify your e-mail address and all that, now it’s time for the party. Log in to your new blog and click on New Post. This brings up a terrifying blank screen and a blinking cursor staring you dead in the face. Get on it, schlepprock. This isn’t Hamlet here, it’s blogging. And it’s your first blog post, so don’t expect anything great. Just write something. Introduce yourself and your blog and outline what you hope to accomplish. The goal is to write and forget about it. You’ll hone your blogging skill as you go, but the only way to get better at blogging is to keep blogging.

    • 6

      STAY ON TOPIC

This is one of the newest things I have learned, and it can be one of the most difficult. You don’t want to be posting a bunch of stuff about your new toy poodle on your Original Surf Spot blog. The reason treads on complicated ground, with a lot of ins and outs about search engine optimization (SEO). But the general idea is you want your blog to be solid. At first your blog probably won’t show up anywhere near the first few pages of search results when someone searches for "surfing blogs," but after a long stretch of continually posting original content about surfing, your surf blog will creep its way up the list towards the coveted number one spot on Google! But if you’re posting about different topics all over the place, someone who clicks on your blog looking for surfing information probably won’t stick around and definitely won’t come back to your new blog.

So if you want people to actually read your blog, keep it fairly focused on a single topic.

    • 7

      POST IT

Click on the button to post this sucker, and there you have it: your very first blog post on your very own blog! And that’s something to write home about, because lots of people don’t have the balls to do what you just did.

Now blog it out the wazoo, son!

    • 8

      MAKING MONEY

Now if you’re going to start making money with your blog, the best thing to do first is set up Google AdSense on your page. Do a Google search for "setting up Google AdSense on Blogger," and you’ll find many guides that will walk you through the process of signing up for and installing AdSense on your new blog.
